You’ll likely need a smog inspection every few years if you’re looking to register your car anywhere in Riverside County. Whether you own a car, truck, RV or other vehicle, our STAR-certified station can complete your smog inspection.
We are located right off the 15 freeway between the Rancho California Road and Winchester just south of Jefferson Ave. Our location in Temecula, CA allows us to serve the city of Temecula, wine country and surrounding areas.
In California, all model year 2000 or newer vehicles are required to receive a periodic smog inspection using the OBDII test. Those model year 1976 to 1999 may be required to receive a different type of smog inspection, based on the area of the state where the vehicle is registered. For any vehicles being registered for the first time in California or transferring ownership, the DMV also requires that they undergo an emissions check.
Temecula and most surrounding areas are designated Enhanced Areas by the state, requiring a biennial smog inspection that includes an acceleration simulation mode test for determining nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Enhanced areas are defined as areas that do not meet federal or state air quality standards for ozone and are considered California’s smoggiest urban areas.
Because of this, the California Bureau of Automotive Repair requires smog checks, and if necessary smog repair, once every two years, or when certain things happen to cars. This includes title transfer smog test.

When it comes to choosing which smog station to get your smog certification with, there are two options to go with: a test only station or a test and repair station. Test only stations can only test cars, and test and repair stations can repair your vehicle’s emissions system after the inspection if you fail.
You may think it’s a better idea to go to smog check stations that can do both, but most test and repair stations will purposefully fail cars to make extra money. Going with a station that can only smog check vehicles will ensure you get accurate information for your DMV smog test.
At Tri-City Smog, our technicians are ASE-certified and have the tools and expertise to get your vehicle in and out as quickly as possible. Our average smog check takes less than 15 minutes. You can come in any time during business hours, no appointment needed.
If your DMV notice directs you to a test-only or STAR station, come to us and we’ll take care of your state smog inspection. We don’t do repairs, so no need to worry about our technicians failing your vehicle just to increase the price for repairs. Your vehicle either passes or it doesn’t, and we want you to pass!
